Meet Our Therapists

Matt Bierds, MA, LPCC, LPC-S

Licensed Professional Clinical Mental Health Counselor (NM)

Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (TX)
Licensed School Counselor (TX)

Welcome! I have worked in the counseling profession since 2006. I began my career as a school counselor, working with children, families, and educators at all levels of academics (Elementary, Middle, and High School). I have also worked in private practice for over ten years, helping thousands of clients work through life’s challenges and become healthier.

I have specific training and expertise in the following areas:

  • General Anxiety and Depression

  • Problematic Sexual Behavior (infidelity, pornography, etc.)

  • Entrepreneur and Young Professional Growth and Development

  • Men’s Issues

  • Premarital Counseling

My belief is counseling should be a positive, strength-based process. I see my clients in a collaborative role in which we work together to create and meet your counseling/life goals. I don’t believe in creating labels, or defining people in such rigid ways, so we avoid those by focusing on your needs and helping you achieve a higher level of life satisfaction.

Regarding my education and training, I earned my BS at Texas A&M University in 2001, and completed my MA in Community Counseling from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 2006. In 2018, I completed additional training to become a Supervisor for Licensed Professional Counselor Associates in Texas.

I have received additional training in the following areas:

  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

  • Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Being trained in a multitude of therapeutic modalities allows me to provide the service that best meets your needs. For example, sometimes we can address the challenge you’re facing using SFBT and it may only take 4-6 sessions, whereas other times it may involve a more detailed process that takes a year or more. My approach is to help you understand new perspectives, gain control of your life, and envision a fulfilling future.

A little bit about me

We love living in ABQ! The food, culture, events, outdoor activities, etc. make it a unique and awesome place to call home. When not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family, attending all types of sports events (UNM, Isotopes, Ice Wolves), growing my spiritual side, and exercise. My goal is to strive for balance with a focus on family first.
